The County government has issued a plea to residents to join efforts in combating the increasing incidents of vandalism directed at street lights.
They warn that strict measures will be enforced against those responsible.
Speaking to the press, Peter Akono, the County executive committee member for Lands, Physical Planning, and Urban Areas Management expressed concern over the rising trend of vandalism affecting both the public and the County administration.
According to Akono, vandals target various components including bulbs, cables, solar panels, and poles, resulting in streets being shrouded in darkness, particularly during the night.
He stated, “The vandals deliberately target bulbs, cables, solar panels, and poles, leaving streets in darkness, especially at night.”
To address this issue, a collaborative effort involving officers from Lodwar Municipality and County directorates of Energy, Lands, and Enforcement has been established to coordinate responses.
Akono highlighted the severity of the situation, stating, “From our statistics, Lodwar Municipality was the worst hit.
Cases have been reported from Napetet, Nawaitorong, Nakwamekwi, Ekalees area, and Kerio Junction.
Other cases are from Kakuma and Lokichoggio.”
The consequences of such vandalism extend beyond mere inconvenience, impacting commerce and contributing to heightened insecurity in affected areas.
In response, the County Executive emphasized their commitment to safeguarding investments and infrastructure aimed at improving residents’ lives.
He warned, “We will take stern action in order to protect investment and installations aimed at bettering the lives of the residents.”
Residents, like Ewoi Ekuwam from Lodwar Municipality, expressed concerns about the potential resurgence of criminal activities due to the darkness caused by vandalized street lights.
Ekuwam stated, “I will be one of the happiest people if the County responds to this problem.”
Akono urged the public to remain vigilant against vandalism and encouraged them to report any incidents to the authorities promptly.
He advised, “The public should be vigilant on the vandalism challenge and report cases either to the police or the County offices.”
