A Mombasa court Wednesday granted police more time to complete investigations in a case where a 20-year-old man allegedly murdered his 80-year-old grandmother.
Abdulaziz Swaleh is accused of slitting her grandmother, Sharifffa Ali Salim’s throat in Old Town, on January 21 in an argument in her bedroom.
Principal Magistrate Vincent Adet on Monday ordered that the accused be taken for a mental assessment test.
The slain woman’s house help, Antonina Bahati, who was nearby, raised an alarm upon hearing the commotion.
Swaleh was restrained by members of the public who were alerted by the screams.
The killer’s weapon was found next to the body.
The man had also been accused of killing another relative in similar circumstances.
Police told the court on Monday that they were yet to analyze the suspect’s phone data and that of the deceased, and that they had not established the cause of the gruesome murder.
The investigator advised that the suspect be denied bond pending the conclusion of investigations in the interest of justice, good order, public safety and security.
The case will be mentioned on February 8, 2023.
