In a recent court proceeding at Kahawa Law Courts in Kiambu County, shocking revelations emerged regarding the disappearance of Mohamed Zaid Sami, Zulfiqar Ahmed Khan, and their driver Nicodemus Mwania Mwange in July 2022.
According to a witness, who remains unnamed, government vehicles, particularly those associated with the now-defunct Special Services Unit (SSU) of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), were allegedly involved in trailing, apprehending, and disposing of the bodies of the victims within Aberdares National Park, located in Nyeri County.
The witness disclosed that among the vehicles implicated was one with the registration number GKB 038U.
This vehicle, as per the testimony, was documented in the park’s car tracking logs, entering through the Tree Tops gate at 6:34 pm on July 22, 2022—significantly beyond the park’s official visiting hours of 6 am to 6 pm.
Notably, this entry was not recorded in the gate vehicle register book, based on records retrieved from Kenya Wildlife Service gate registers.
Further investigation into the matter involved the confiscation of 20 mobile phones belonging to the accused individuals, which were subjected to forensic analysis by the DCI before being forwarded to the Communications Authority of Kenya for additional scrutiny.
Subsequently, some of these devices were sent to India for further analysis to extract more details regarding the events surrounding the alleged abduction of the three victims.
Highlighted during the proceedings was a correspondence dated October 16, found on one of the confiscated phones, exchanged between Corporal John Mwangi Kamau and Corporal Joseph Mwenda Mbaya.
In the exchange, Mbaya queried Kamau about revisiting the scene for clearance, to which Kamau purportedly responded, “Tanki alienda,” mentioning one of the accused persons.
The accused individuals, consisting of thirteen DCI officers and two others, face a litany of charges including abduction with intent to murder, conspiracy to commit a felony, and perpetration of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment.
Additionally, charges of cooperating in the execution of such treatment, as well as forgery, have been leveled against them.
The victims, Mr. Sami and Mr. Khan, reportedly arrived in Kenya in April 2022 to participate in the ICT campaign of then-deputy president William Ruto, in preparation for the August 2022 General Election.
Their disappearance occurred on July 25, allegedly after being abducted outside the Ole Sereni Hotel in Nairobi.
The case is scheduled for further hearings on June 20, as the legal proceedings continue to unravel the events surrounding this troubling incident.
