In response to the tragic deaths of 17 individuals from consuming illegal brew in Kangai and Kandongu villages of Kirinyaga County, the government has taken action by suspending two Chiefs and their assistants.
County Commissioner Hussein Allason Hussein disclosed during a public gathering at Kangai ward that an investigation is underway into the roles of these government officials.
Confirming the administrative measures, Hussein stated, “The two chiefs and their assistants are being investigated.”
This move follows Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s directive issued during the mass burial prayers held at Kangai Primary School ground on February 17.
Those affected by the interdiction include Kathiga location Chief Jeremiah Muriithi Njoka and his assistant chief Samuel Ndung’u Kiarie from Kariko-ini sub-location, as well as Mutithi location chief Weston Muthike Ngiria and his assistant chief Peter Nyaga from Kianjogu sub-location.
However, the decision to interdict Chief Jeremiah Muriithi has drawn criticism from some residents, particularly considering his impending retirement in June.
Supporters of Chief Muriithi argue that he actively fought against the operations of illegal alcohol traders, notably California bar owner John Muriithi, although they allege sabotage by local police officers.
Deputy President Gachagua emphasized the failure of the four government officers and police personnel to effectively curb the trade of deadly liquor within their jurisdictions.
As a result, stringent measures have been implemented, with only 80 out of 330 bars in the Mwea West sub-county permitted to operate presently.
In a pledge to the community, the County Commissioner affirmed, “Nobody will die in Kangai and Kandongu villages from consuming illicit alcohol.
We are here to protect you and deal with those selling deadly alcohol ruthlessly.”
This statement underscores the government’s commitment to eradicating the menace of illegal brews and safeguarding public health.
