The minister of roads and other infrastructure Kipchumba Murkomen has finally spoke about the nuisance of road accidents that have been occurred in the recent weeks.
Murkomen who joined other leaders at the AIC Narok church religious training center, said that his ministry should not be blamed for the increased of accident in the country hence it’s the responsibility of every Kenya to help on the road safety.
The minister went ahead and gave statistics on how accident have been costing different numbers of lives in the past years, including the number of deaths due to accident in the past three months.
“When we took over the office last year, we had lost 4,650 in 2022, last year we reduced a little and it come to 4,300. This month as we speak right now, already the statistics that I have been used, we have already lost 1,213 people in 3 months! Only healthy people were traveling” he said.
Murkomen said added that last year, during the same period, Kenya had lost 1,146 people, 67 people died during the same period this year.
The Minister continue said that many deaths have resulted from riding motorcycles while the passengers of the motorcycles are also victims of it.
“The ones who have died the most are people in the countryside, in the cities. You see, until now we have lost 283 people who were riding motorcycles, and the motorcycle passengers are 103” he noted.
In addition, the minister said so far those who have been lost in car accidents are 271 and those who have been hit by cars while crossing the road are 445 people.
He urged all Kenyans to be careful on the roads especial drivers and those crossing roads while his department is on the move to reduce road accident countrywide.
