A fire has destroyed the dormitory at Fr Makewa High School in Machakos early Tuesday morning.
The blaze, which erupted before dawn, completely engulfed the building, which is located in Ikombe Division, Yatta Subcounty.
Fr Bernard Musango, who oversees the school and whose church is nearby, reported that no students were injured as the fire broke out during their morning study session.
“All the students are safe,” Musango confirmed.
The dormitory, which housed up to 110 students, was vacant at the time of the fire.
Emergency response came from various sources, including students, teachers, local residents, and the fire brigade from the Machakos County Government.
Together, they managed to control the fire.
However, several students lost personal belongings such as clothing, bedding, and other essentials in the blaze.
This incident adds to a troubling trend in Machakos County, where several schools have been closed indefinitely due to similar fire incidents and student unrest.
The situation mirrors a broader issue affecting many regions, with at least nine schools in Makueni County also shut down indefinitely due to unrest.
Schools in Machakos County affected by recent closures include Mumbuni Boys, Muthetheni Girls, Masii Girls, Machakos School, Nyayo Girls, Masinga Boys, and Mtituni S. A Secondary.
The ongoing crisis highlights the urgent need for measures to address both the safety of school facilities and the underlying causes of student unrest.
