Syrian state media and activists say that at least two people have lost their lives in what is believed to be an Israeli missile strike in the capital city of Damascus.
According to the Syrian military, a block of flats in the Kafr Sousa district was hit by several missiles, resulting in the deaths of two civilians.
“The Israeli military has not commented on the incident, but it has previously acknowledged carrying out numerous strikes in Syria targeting Iranian-linked groups.”
Reports from a monitoring group suggest that among the casualties were two foreigners and one Syrian civilian.
The area reportedly sees the presence of high-ranking officials from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and Hezbollah, a Lebanese group.
The Israeli military has been accused of increasing its strikes in Syria since the conflict began in the Gaza Strip. This escalation is seen as a response to cross-border attacks by Hezbollah and other Iran-backed groups in Lebanon and Syria.
“Last month, a similar strike in Damascus attributed to Israel resulted in the deaths of five senior Revolutionary Guards and several Syrian security personnel.”
Syria’s official news agency, Sana, stated that the missiles were launched towards Damascus from the Israel-occupied Golan Heights just before 09:40 local time on Wednesday.
The strike targeted a residential building in Kafr Sousa, resulting in the deaths of two civilians and injuring another.
According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the casualties included two non-Syrian nationals who were inside the targeted building, while a Syrian civilian on the street below was killed by falling debris.
In a previous attack in February 2023, a rocket strike blamed on Israel claimed the lives of at least five individuals in the same area, close to a security complex.
Reports suggest that the target of that attack was a facility where Iranian and Syrian military experts were meeting to advance the capabilities of Iran-backed groups in drone or missile technology.
“Iran and its allied armed groups, collectively referred to as the ‘Axis of Resistance,’ oppose Israel and the
The US. Some of these groups, like Hamas and Hezbollah, are designated as terrorist organizations by several countries.”
