The number of lives lost in a tragic road accident in Mbooni, Makueni County, surged to 12 as two more passengers succumbed to their injuries.
The aftermath of the early morning crash left the fourteen-seater Matatu severely damaged.
The PSV, designed for fourteen passengers, was carrying seventeen occupants when the crash occurred along the Kikima-Kali-Machakos road in Makueni County.
Witnesses reported that the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to roll into a ditch at the roadside.

Jeremiah Kimani, an eyewitness, emphasized the challenging terrain of the road, stating, “The vehicle was speeding as if time was running out.
Honestly, this road has steep slopes.”
Evelyn Mumbe, a survivor and passenger on the Matatu, recalled the moment of impact, expressing disbelief at her survival.
She recounted, “I heard the driver shouting, saying things have gone wrong.
Since I was seated in the front, I asked him what had happened.
He said the brakes were not working, and after a short distance, the vehicle overturned.
It rolled, and I heard people screaming.”
By the time the Matatu came to a halt in the valley, ten individuals had lost their lives, and seven were injured, including one of Bramwell Kisilu’s relatives.
Kisilu shared that his relative sustained injuries to the hand while boarding the vehicle and later succumbed.
The injured were rushed to Mbooni Sub-County Hospital for emergency treatment.
Authorities in the county are now urging road users to exercise vigilance and caution, especially during the festive season travels.
The acting county commissioner emphasized the importance of matatu saccos and passengers adhering to rules and regulations to ensure safety on the roads.
“During this time, we urge the public not to board overcrowded vehicles.
There are plenty of vehicles, and you can wait for another one.
If it’s nighttime, you can find a place to stay.
There’s no need to board a packed vehicle, tightly arranged like bags of maize,” warned Gicharu.
As the survivors continue to receive treatment, one of them has already been discharged from the hospital.
The community mourns the loss of lives and emphasizes the need for increased road safety awareness during the holiday season.
