Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale took a significant step on Wednesday by inaugurating a new housing project aimed at alleviating the accommodation shortage confronting Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel.
With plans to erect 788 housing units in the Kwa Mbuzi area of Laikipia County, CS Duale underscored the pressing need to address the housing deficit within the military ranks.
He revealed staggering statistics, stating that the KDF currently faces a shortfall of 33,400 married quarters and 25,800 single quarters, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
In his statement, Duale elucidated on the scope of the project, highlighting its inclusion in a broader plan encompassing the construction of 3,069 housing units across five regions.
He remarked, “The new development in Laikipia is a crucial part of a broader plan that includes the construction of 3,069 housing units across five regions.
In the 18th May 2024 I commissioned the construction of 952 units in Nakuru County.”
This initiative aims to provide comprehensive housing solutions to KDF personnel in Nakuru, Gilgil, Mariakani, Nairobi, and Nanyuki.
The project primarily focuses on single quarters, with 2,089 units designated for this purpose.
Additionally, it includes 980 Married Quarters, comprising two and three-bedroom units, to cater to the needs of soldiers’ families.
Duale emphasized that the success of the housing initiative relies on a strategic Public-Private Partnership (PPP), leveraging the combined strengths of the public and private sectors.
He stated, “By fostering collaborative efforts and forging strong partnerships, the government aims to provide sustainable and supportive living environments for its defence personnel.”
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by several key figures, including Defence PS Patrick Mariru, General Officer Commanding Eastern Command Maj. Gen. Luka Kutto, and Assistant Chief of Defence Forces in charge of Personnel and Logistics Maj.
Gen. David Ketter. Their presence underscored the government’s commitment to addressing the housing needs of KDF personnel.
As the project moves forward, it represents a significant stride towards enhancing the welfare and living standards of those serving in the nation’s defence forces.
