On Monday, August 19, 2024, Aden Duale, the newly appointed Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, conducted a familiarization visit to the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) headquarters in Karura, Nairobi.
During the visit, Duale was received with a guard of honor by KFS rangers, marking a formal welcome to his new role.
Duale, who recently transitioned from the Ministry of Defense, was appointed as part of a cabinet reshuffle initiated by President William Ruto.
This reshuffle followed significant demonstrations by Gen Zs calling for new leadership. Duale replaces Soipan Tuya, who has been reassigned to the Ministry of Defense.
Accompanied by Forestry Principal Secretary Gitonga Mugambi, Duale was greeted by KFS leadership, including Chief Conservator of Forests Alex Lemarkoko and KFS Board Chairman Titus Korir.
During his visit, Duale engaged with the KFS Board, management, and staff to discuss the organization’s current operations and future plans.
In a statement on his official X account, Duale underscored his dedication to addressing pressing environmental issues.
“I am honored to be sworn in as Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry.
Kenya faces urgent environmental challenges that require innovative solutions,” Duale said.
He emphasized his commitment to tackling climate change, deforestation, and environmental degradation.
Duale outlined his intention to set high standards for sustainable development through a science-based and data-driven approach.
Duale officially assumed his role on August 12, 2024, succeeding Soipan Tuya.
His visit to the KFS signifies a crucial step in his new role, reflecting his focus on advancing Kenya’s environmental conservation efforts.
The engagement with KFS is expected to be pivotal in shaping the future direction of the country’s environmental policies and initiatives.
