The head of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Twalib Mbarak, has shared insights into the agency’s pursuit of corruption cases in an exclusive interview with Citizen TV.
Mbarak issued a stern warning to government officials involved in misusing public funds, asserting that they would face consequences.
In the interview, Mbarak highlighted a significant case involving former Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala.
The case revolves around the irregular procurement and payment of Sh.8.5 billion for the construction of the proposed Ronald Ngala Utalii College in Vipingo.
Mbarak emphasized the severity of the graft, revealing that the allocated funds were initially Sh.2 billion but ballooned to Sh.8 billion, causing a stalled construction project.
Mbarak disclosed that the EACC is preparing to re-arrest Balala and others implicated in the case, emphasizing the multifaceted nature of the investigation.
He expressed concern over corruption hindering grand projects, labeling it as a sad reality for the country.
The EACC chief also revealed ongoing investigations into alleged embezzlement at the National Museums of Kenya and the Lake Turkana Wind Power project.
In the National Museums case, former head Mzalendo Kibunjia is accused of misusing millions through fictitious ghost workers.
Additionally, Mbarak shared that the EACC is closely monitoring the lifestyles of current Cabinet members.
He raised a red flag regarding sudden and unexplained lifestyle changes among some Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries, indicating potential corruption.
Mbarak, drawing on his military background, asserted his fearlessness in the face of corruption.
He dismissed concerns about intimidation from high-profile individuals, stating that his military experience has equipped him with resilience.
“Fighting corruption is like guerrilla warfare,” Mbarak remarked, highlighting the unconventional nature of the battle.
He expressed confidence in the EACC’s ability to uphold the rule of law and restore public dignity despite acknowledging the challenges in the fight against corruption.
