The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has taken legal action to freeze sh. 643.2 million linked to a City Hall worker who earns a modest Sh. 55,000 per month.
They want this money to go back to the government because it’s unclear how this employee accumulated such a large sum.
A court order has already frozen these funds, including valuable property like land, apartments, luxury cars, and a famous nightclub in Nairobi, all tied to this employee.
In 2022, Judge Esther Maina granted this order to let EACC investigate claims that the employee received bribes and illegal payments through their job, leading to the accumulation of millions of shillings and assets, including two high-end cars.
According to court records, despite earning just sh. 55,000 each month, the employee managed to receive and transfer shs. 506 million through their bank accounts and their family’s accounts between January 2016 and October 2022.
Investigations revealed that their role at the county government involved overseeing outdoor advertisements, monitoring ads, and ensuring advertisers followed the rules and made payments.
The EACC is looking into how a City Hall employee with a low salary came to possess sh. 643.2 million in unexplained wealth, including property and cash, through their job, leading to a court order to freeze these assets.
