Police in Tharaka Nithi County are investigating the death of an 80-year-old man whose decomposing body was found in an uncovered septic tank after he had been missing for about 10 days.
The incident was reported on Wednesday afternoon by a resident believed to have been living with a mental disorder, had been found dead.
Police visited the scene and established that the deceased’s body was lying in an incomplete and uncovered septic tank about eight metres deep, located outside the homestead near a perimeter fence.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the elderly man had not been seen for the past 10 days. Police said the area chief was aware of his disappearance, although no official missing person report had been made to the police.
The scene was documented before the body was removed to Marimanti Level 4 Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.

And police have launched investigations after an unidentified man was fatally struck by a train in Elburgon, Nakuru County, on Wednesday morning.
The accident occurred at around 11:00 a.m. at kilometre 24/7 along the railway line between Njoro and Nakuru.
The train was travelling towards Nakuru when it hit the unknown adult male, who died at the scene.
Police visited and processed the scene before the body was removed to the Elburgon Mortuary.
The deceased’s body is being preserved pending identification and a post-mortem examination.
Police said detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) attached to Nakuru Railways have taken over the case to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
