In a bold move to challenge the dominance of ChatGPT and pave the way for safer artificial intelligence (AI) development, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has officially launched his long-teased AI startup, xAI.
Unveiling his team of engineers from prominent U.S. technology firms, Musk aims to build an alternative to existing AI technologies.
With his track record as the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and owner of Twitter, Musk’s foray into AI is eagerly anticipated.
Expressing concerns about the potential “civilizational destruction” caused by AI, Musk has repeatedly called for caution and regulation in its development.

During a Twitter Spaces event held on Wednesday evening, he detailed his vision for building a safer AI.
Instead of explicitly programming morality into the AI system, xAI will focus on creating a “maximally curious” AI, as Musk explained.
He believes that encouraging the AI to understand the true nature of the universe is crucial for AI safety and a pro-humanity approach. Musk emphasized that humanity’s innate curiosity makes it inherently more interesting than any alternative.
In an intriguing prediction, Musk also claimed that superintelligence, or AI that surpasses human intelligence, will arrive within the next five to six years.
These bold statements underscore Musk’s determination to address the challenges and implications of AI development head-on.
It’s worth noting that Musk co-founded OpenAI, the company responsible for developing ChatGPT, back in 2015. However, he stepped down from the company’s board in 2018.
Interestingly, Microsoft is one of the investors in OpenAI, further highlighting the competitive landscape surrounding AI development.
xAI’s website announced an upcoming Twitter Spaces event on July 14, where more details about the startup’s plans will be shared.
The team assembled at xAI includes renowned engineers from top technology firms, such as Igor Babuschkin, a former engineer at Google’s DeepMind; Tony Wu, who previously worked at Google; Christian Szegedy, a former research scientist at Google; and Greg Yang, formerly associated with Microsoft.
Notably, Musk registered a separate firm named X.AI Corp in March, incorporated in Nevada, with himself as the sole director. This move aligns with his previous announcement of launching TruthGPT, an AI system focused on maximum truth-seeking capabilities to rival Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s Bing AI.
Generative AI has gained considerable attention since OpenAI launched the popular chatbot ChatGPT in November last year, preceding the releases of Bard and Bing AI.
Musk’s xAI venture aims to push the boundaries of AI technology further and provide a competitive alternative to existing offerings.
To strengthen the expertise of the xAI team, Dan Hendrycks, the director of the Center for AI Safety, will be advising the company. Hendrycks specializes in researching the risks associated with AI, contributing valuable insights to the development of safer AI technologies.
While xAI operates as a separate company from X Corp, Musk’s new venture will maintain close ties with Twitter, Tesla, and other companies, as mentioned on the startup’s website. In line with this ambitious endeavor, xAI is actively recruiting experienced engineers and researchers in the San Francisco Bay Area to join their team.
Elon Musk’s xAI represents a significant step forward in the quest for safer AI technologies. With a talented team and Musk’s visionary leadership, the startup aims to challenge the status quo and carve out a unique position in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.
