Ethiopian Airlines has announced the suspension of its flights to and from Asmara, Eritrea, effective September 3, 2024.
The airline cited challenging operating conditions in Eritrea as the reason for this decision, stating that these conditions are beyond their control.
In a statement released on Monday, Ethiopian Airlines expressed regret over the disruption and assured affected customers that they are working to mitigate the impact.
“Ethiopian Airlines regrets to inform its valued passengers that flights to Asmara have been suspended due to severe operating difficulties encountered in Eritrea,” the statement read.
The airline has pledged to assist affected travelers by rebooking them on alternative airlines at no extra cost or providing full refunds for their tickets.
“We will make every effort to rebook passengers on other airlines without additional charges.
Alternatively, passengers can opt for a full refund of their tickets,” the statement continued.
Ethiopian Airlines also apologized for any inconvenience caused and thanked customers for their understanding during this period.
This development follows a previous announcement by Ethiopian Airlines, which had received a notice from the Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority indicating that all Ethiopian Airlines flights to Eritrea would be suspended from September 30, 2024.
The reasons for this upcoming suspension were not disclosed, and the airline has sought further clarification on the matter.
Prior to this suspension, Ethiopian Airlines operated five weekly flights to Asmara.
