Detectives in Nakuru are investigating the mysterious murder of a 22-year-old Mount Kenya University (MKU) student whose body was discovered in a maize field in Kiamunyi, Rongai Constituency, on Monday afternoon.
According to police, personal items belonging to the student, including her university and national IDs, as well as a bus ticket from Thika to Nakuru, were found beside her body.
First responders on the scene revealed that the travel ticket indicated she had journeyed from Thika to Nakuru on Saturday.
Kiamunyi Senior Chief Wilson Maraga confirmed the incident, explaining that the body was discovered in the Mercy Njeri Sub-location.
“The ticket shows she traveled to Nakuru from Thika on Saturday, likely arriving in the evening, as it was booked around 2 p.m.,” said the chief.
He also suggested that the student may have been killed elsewhere and her body moved to the area, noting that there were no signs of struggle where the body was found.
“Our area is typically peaceful, and we haven’t had major security issues here, so we believe this might be an isolated case,” added Chief Maraga.
Local resident Brighton Roman, who was the first to discover the body, said he stumbled upon it while walking home from a nearby shop.
He raised the alarm, and three farmworkers quickly joined him at the scene, notifying the assistant chief.
“There was a maize field, and I thought the person was perhaps someone working in the plantation,” Brighton said, recounting his discovery.
Police have since launched an investigation to determine the cause of death and identify those responsible.
The student’s body was transported to Nakuru Referral Hospital for further examination.
This incident follows the recent death of another university student, Mercy Kwamboka, from the University of Nairobi’s Chiromo Campus. Kwamboka had gone missing from her home in Pipeline, Nairobi, on September 28 after receiving a late-night phone call.
Her body was found days later, dumped in a thicket in Kasarani’s Mwiki area, adding to growing concerns over the safety of students in Kenya.
