Residents in various parts of Meru and Tharaka Nithi Counties are expressing significant concern over a recent locust invasion in their areas.
In interviews with Citizen Digital, locals mentioned that the locusts are now threatening their farms.
The affected regions in Tharaka Nithi County include Mauthini, Kamacabi, and Kamutuandu.
In Meru County, the invasion has impacted areas such as Kisimani along the Tigania-Igembe border, Ndamuuru, Amwathi, and surrounding semi-arid regions.
As some residents face an imminent invasion, measures are being implemented to prevent further escalation of the crisis.
Officials from both counties have announced that they will supervise a spraying operation starting next week to eradicate the tree locusts.
James Mutia, the Chief Officer of Agriculture, Livestock Development, and Fisheries in Meru County, acknowledged the situation and assured quick intervention.
“Some farmers confuse desert locusts with other grasshopper species like tree locusts,” Mutia stated.
Tree locusts typically migrate in swarms at night, while desert locusts move during the daytime.
Additionally, tree locusts are generally larger in size compared to desert locusts.
