Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has officially transferred the party’s leadership to Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, who will serve in an acting capacity.
This transition allows Odinga to focus on his campaign for the position of Chairman of the African Union Commission (AUC).
During a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Mombasa on Saturday, Odinga praised Nyong’o for his consistent support and foundational role within the party since its inception over 20 years ago.
He emphasized that the Central Committee’s recent decision to appoint Nyong’o as acting leader would help maintain the party’s core values and ideologies.
“In alignment with a recent Central Committee decision, I am formally entrusting our founding Secretary General, Professor Anyang’ Nyong’o, with the leadership of our party.
This will enable me to fully engage in the final and complex stages of my campaign for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission,” Odinga stated.
He further noted, “The Central Committee chose a leader who has been instrumental in guiding our party from the start.
This assures us of the ideological continuity and clarity that define our movement.”
Odinga expressed gratitude to party members and supporters for their dedication over the years, acknowledging the journey they’ve shared and the challenges they’ve faced together.
Additionally, the NEC meeting confirmed several recent appointments made by the Central Committee following the resignation of senior officials to take on roles in the national government.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has been named the new National Chairperson, succeeding John Mbadi, who is now the Treasury Cabinet Secretary.
Kisii Governor Simba Arati and Vihiga Senator have been appointed as Deputy Party Leaders, replacing Cabinet Secretaries Wycliffe Oparanya (MSMEs) and Hassan Joho (Mining and Blue Economy).
Other changes include Kisumu West MP Rosa Buyu taking over as Secretary for Political Affairs from Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi, while Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga steps in as the new Deputy Organizing Secretary.
