Authorities in Machakos are investigating the cause of a fire that broke out Thursday evening at Mumbuni Girls Secondary School, damaging part of a girls’ dormitory and destroying students’ property of unknown value.
The fire started at around 6:30 p.m. on the second floor of a two-storey building that houses all female students. It consumed several beds, mattresses, blankets, boxes, and other personal belongings.
Machakos County firefighters responded quickly, containing the blaze before it could spread further.
Police officers from Machakos Police Station also arrived promptly to maintain order as worried parents and local residents attempted to enter the school to help with rescue efforts.
Machakos Deputy County Commissioner David Rotich confirmed that no injuries were reported.
However, a few students went into shock and were taken to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for treatment before returning to school.
Senior education officials, including County TSC Director Jimal Ahmed and County Director of Education Margaret Mwirigi, visited the school but declined to comment, citing an ongoing investigation into the cause of the fire.
Parents who rushed to the scene shared their relief that there were no serious injuries.
Faith Mathei, whose sister is a student at the school, said she was thankful all students were safe.
Another parent, Edna Ndunge, said she helped rush some students to hospital, while Alfred Nguyo reported that three girls were treated for shock and later returned to class.
Mumbuni Girls Secondary School is located about two kilometres from Machakos town.
