Five Arrested After Man Dies Following Assault By Relatives In Kakamega

Police in Kakamega County arrested five members of the same family after a 30-year-old man died while undergoing treatment following an alleged assault.

The incident was reported on Friday, prompting officers from Khwisero Police Station and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to visit Emulunya Village in Emasatsi Sub-location, Kisa East.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased, identified as Justus Mkaka Aswani, was allegedly assaulted by his cousins at about 1:00 a.m. after they accused him of breaking window panes and causing a disturbance while appearing intoxicated.

A relative rushed Aswani to Vihiga Teaching and Referral Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.

Police who examined the body at the hospital mortuary noted a large swelling on the back of the head and bruises on the right thigh.

Investigators also recovered a hammer believed to have been used during the assault, and it has been retained as an exhibit.

The scene was documented by investigators, while the body remains at the Vihiga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Police said investigations are ongoing before the suspects are arraigned in court.
