Former England manager, Terry Venables, has passed away at the age of 80 after battling a prolonged illness.
Known for guiding England to the Euro 96 semi-finals and managing clubs such as Barcelona and Tottenham, Venables left an indelible mark on the football world.
In a family statement, it was shared, “We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness.”
The family requested privacy during this difficult time.
Venables, a dynamic figure in football, achieved success both as a player and manager.
As a player, he earned two England caps and made over 500 club appearances for Chelsea, Queens Park Rangers, and Tottenham.


His managerial prowess shone when he led Barcelona to a La Liga victory and a European Cup final.
Renowned personalities in football expressed their grief. Gary Lineker, former England captain, hailed Venables as the “best, most innovative coach” he had played for Alan Shearer, a member of the Euro 96 squad, expressed deep sadness, saying, “The great Terry Venables has passed away. RIP Boss.
I owe you so much. You were amazing.”
Tottenham, one of Venables’ managerial stops, will pay tribute with a minute’s applause and players wearing black armbands during their upcoming Premier League match against Aston Villa.
Current England manager Gareth Southgate, who played under Venables in Euro 96, praised his tactical excellence and ability to create a positive environment for players.
Gary Neville called Venables the “most technically gifted British coach we’ve ever produced.”
Venables’ journey in football, from Chelsea apprentice to England boss, showcased his resilience and skill.
\Nicknamed ‘El Tel,’ he managed Barcelona to La Liga glory in 1985 and later guided England through a memorable Euro 96 campaign.
The League Managers’ Association expressed deep sadness, stating, “The LMA is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of LMA member and former LMA president Terry Venables.”
