A former senior General Service Unit (GSU) officer was detained after allegedly shooting and seriously injuring his wife at their residence in Ketete, Narok County.
Stephen Kiptanui Soi, a former senior official with the National Olympic Committee and a licensed firearm owner, reportedly shot his wife, a High Court advocate, during a domestic dispute on the morning of August 27.
The advocate sustained a gunshot wound to her left thigh and is currently in stable condition at a local private hospital, according to police reports.
The incident was promptly reported to the Mulot police station, which led to an immediate response from law enforcement.
At the scene, authorities discovered a spare magazine and another magazine loaded with 12 rounds of ammunition.
By the time police arrived, Soi had fled, leading to a brief manhunt.
The Ceska pistol used in the shooting was later found in Soi’s bedroom, along with a magazine containing six bullets.
A spent cartridge was also recovered from the scene.
The firearm has been sent for ballistic testing to assist in the investigation.
Police eventually located Soi and informed him of his arrest.
The 68-year-old is expected to face charges of attempted murder. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear.
Soi has a history of controversy.
In 2021, he was convicted by the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court on multiple counts of abuse of office and failure to comply with financial management laws related to the 2016 Rio Olympics.
He was initially sentenced to pay a fine of Sh105 million or serve a 17-year prison term.
The court found him guilty of approving unlawful payments and causing financial losses through canceled plane tickets.
However, in January 2023, the High Court overturned his conviction on appeal, ruling that his defense had not been properly considered in the original trial.
Before his dismissal from the police service in 2004, Soi was an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and was not widely known outside his official duties.
His recent arrest has brought renewed attention to his controversial past.
