Former talk show host Wendy Williams has been diagnosed with progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia, her representatives revealed.
This announcement was made to address incorrect rumors and provide clarity about her health condition.
“Over time, Wendy has been open about her health battles, including Graves’ Disease and Lymphedema, alongside other significant health challenges,” stated her care team in a press release.
Williams’ struggles with processing information and occasional erratic behavior had prompted speculation about her condition.
Her diagnoses of aphasia and dementia were confirmed by Weill Cornell Medicine in 2023.
Aphasia and dementia affect communication, personality, and language comprehension, as outlined by the Mayo Clinic.
The decision to share this news was challenging but made to foster understanding and compassion for Wendy, as well as to raise awareness about these conditions.
Williams is currently under a court-ordered guardianship.
A Lifetime documentary about her, produced with her family’s involvement, is scheduled for release soon.
“The Wendy Williams Show,” which she hosted until 2022, saw Sherri Shepherd taking over her time slot.
Williams’ absence from hosting duties during the show’s final season was initially attributed to her recovery from COVID-19 and later to her struggle with Graves’ disease.
Starting her radio career, Williams gained fame for her sharp wit and unfiltered interviews.
Her candid nature, although admired by many, also stirred controversies in the entertainment industry.
She has been transparent about her past battle with addiction, even discussing her stay in a sober house during a 2019 episode.
Williams filed for divorce from her husband, Kevin Hunter, in the same year.
