Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), including members of the Operations Support Unit and DCI Coast, have arrested four suspects linked to the abduction and gang rape of Bruce John Kajira on September 12, 2024.
The suspects, identified as Abdul Hassan Athman, Esther Muthoni, Violet Adera, and Haji Babu Ndau Mohamed also known as JAY, a Boda Boda operator were presented before the Shanzu Law Court on September 23, 2024.
Abdul Hassan Athman was found in possession of a Haojin motorcycle, registration number KMFV 410G, believed to have been used during the crime.
Haji Babu Ndau Mohamed was apprehended at Lukenya in Athi River while attempting to flee on a Dreamline bus, evading investigators.
The group is suspected of being involved in a larger conspiracy that included additional suspects who remain at large.
According to police reports, Kajira was attacked by a gang of over ten individuals who broke into his home in Bamburi Mwisho.
The assailants misled the victim, claiming they needed to take him to the Mombasa County Governor to apologize for a derogatory social media post he allegedly made about the Governor and his family.
Instead, Kajira was abducted and taken to an undisclosed location, where he was assaulted and gang-raped.
Investigators discovered that during the assault, the suspects maintained communication with their planners, seeking guidance and financial support for their operations.
After committing the crimes, they placed Kajira in a sack and abandoned him in a thicket, leaving him unconscious.
Later that evening, the victim regained consciousness and was assisted by a Good Samaritan who helped him navigate through the wilderness to his home.
Friends later took him to Coast General and Referral Hospital, where he was reportedly denied treatment, prompting them to take him to Beyond Scope Hospital in Kisauni for admission.
The incident was reported to the Bamburi Police Station under OB. 32/13/09/2024, leading to the initiation of investigations.
Statements were collected, and critical evidence, including forensic analysis, was gathered.
At their court appearance, the suspects faced multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit a felony, abduction with intent to confine, gang rape, and assault causing actual bodily harm.
They pleaded not guilty, and the court has scheduled a hearing for September 26, 2024, to rule on their bail application.
The accused have been remanded at Shimo la Tewa Prison.
Ongoing investigations are expected to uncover additional suspects implicated in this heinous crime.
The DCI has also summoned senior officials from the Mombasa County Government believed to have colluded with the perpetrators to clarify their roles in the incident.
