Namibian authorities are investigating the tragic deaths of four young children who suffocated while playing in an abandoned freezer in the Zambezi Region.
The children, aged between three and six, were discovered inside the old deep freezer in Katima Mulilo on Monday afternoon.
Preliminary police reports suggest that the children accidentally became trapped while playing and suffocated inside.
While two of the children died on the scene, the other two passed away at a hospital shortly after being rescued, according to local media.
“One of the fathers, Aranges Shoro, recounted the moment, saying, ‘When I arrived, I saw paramedics tending to my daughter and another girl.
They took them to the hospital, while the other two were placed in police mortuary vehicles,’” reported The Namibian newspaper.
Zambezi regional police commander Andreas Shilelo noted that a hook on the freezer could only be opened from the outside, which contributed to the children’s inability to escape.
It is believed they were trapped for approximately an hour and a half before they suffocated.
The two children who were rushed to Katima Mulilo State Hospital were declared dead upon arrival.
Authorities have yet to determine why the non-working freezer was left outside a family home.
