Four men have been sentenced to 30 years in prison after being found guilty of defiling a 14-year-old girl in the Laini Saba area of Kibera, Nairobi.
The convicts, Emmanuel Mutemi, Kennedy Irungu, Peter Mwaura, and Ben Thuo, committed the crime on New Year’s Eve 2022.
Kibera Law Courts Principal Magistrate Zainab Abdul, delivering the sentence, stated that the prosecution had proven the case beyond reasonable doubt.
The evidence included testimonies from nine prosecution witnesses, which placed the four men at the scene of the crime.
“The magistrate also noted that the offence of defilement has become so rampant in Kibra.
Hence, the sentence should serve as a deterrent to others,” the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) noted in a statement on Thursday.
According to court submissions, the victim was heading home from a church service to usher in the new year on January 1, 2022, at midnight when the four men accosted her.
She testified that her friend managed to escape, but she was cornered by the men who took her to a nearby abandoned mud house and took turns defiling her from midnight until daybreak.
“She further told the court that they threatened to slit her throat if she tried to scream for help,” the ODPP added.
The victim was able to identify the perpetrators through the illumination of street lights and recognized them as individuals she regularly saw in the neighborhood.
