French rapper MHD, whose real name is Mohamed Sylla, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for his involvement in the murder of a young man named Loic K in Paris back in 2018.
A court in Paris found MHD, who is 29 years old, guilty of playing a part in the gang-related killing of Loic K, who was 23 years old at the time.
The tragic incident involved MHD’s Mercedes hitting Loic K, followed by a group of about 12 people beating and stabbing him to death.
MHD, known for his unique music style combining trap and West African music, referred to as “Afro trap,” maintained his innocence throughout the trial, saying, “From the beginning, I have maintained my innocence in this case and I will continue to maintain my innocence.”
He made this statement in a crowded courtroom in Paris.
He argued that he wasn’t present at the scene of the murder and believed that the case against him was built on rumors.
However, a local resident captured the incident on video from his window in the summer of 2018, and the car involved was quickly recognized as MHD’s. Additionally, other witnesses identified him based on his haircut and clothing.
Five of MHD’s co-defendants were also sentenced to prison terms, ranging from 10 to 18 years. On the other hand, three of the accused were acquitted of the charges.
It is not clear at this time whether those sentenced to jail intend to appeal their sentences.
Before pursuing a career in music, MHD worked as a pizza delivery boy in Paris.
He gained a significant following on social media and is known for introducing the music genre “Afro trap” to the world.
Five years ago, he shared the story of how he came up with the concept of “Afro trap” in an interview with the BBC’s What’s New? program.
