In an effort to counter allegations of tribalism leveled against him in the National Assembly, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has pointed to an agreement made between Kenya Kwanza co-principals.
Speaking during a press briefing on Monday evening, Gachagua asserted that recent comments he made about “shareholders” have been taken out of context and used unfairly to label him as promoting tribal interests.
According to Gachagua, the term “shareholders” refers to groups who actively supported the Kenya Kwanza administration in the last election, and he emphasized that his remarks were intended to honor that support.
Gachagua explained that, prior to President William Ruto’s election in 2024, there was an understanding among key Kenya Kwanza leaders regarding representation and support in government.
This pact, he revealed, was aimed at securing an inclusive leadership structure.
He claimed that the Kenya Kwanza coalition’s pre-election agreement outlined power-sharing arrangements that all co-principals, including President Ruto, were aware of and endorsed.
Gachagua insisted that these arrangements were not motivated by tribal considerations but were instead part of a strategy to ensure broad regional support for the coalition.
The Deputy President further divulged specific details from the Kenya Kwanza coalition agreement, revealing that National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi played central roles.
According to Gachagua, Wetangula and Mudavadi negotiated their positions by promising to deliver a significant share of votes from the Western region.
He claimed that both leaders pledged to secure at least 70% of the Western region’s votes for Ruto, in exchange for their high-ranking roles in the administration.
Gachagua expressed his frustration with what he described as “deliberate misinterpretations” of his comments and reiterated that the Kenya Kwanza coalition is committed to inclusivity.
He argued that his remarks were merely a reflection of the coalition’s pact, which he described as a transparent framework aimed at uniting the country under President Ruto’s leadership.
