Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has firmly rebuked certain leaders associated with President William Ruto, criticizing their attempts to undermine his authority.
During an event in Kirinyaga County on Saturday, where he was overseeing an empowerment program, Gachagua expressed his frustration, directly targeting some Cabinet Secretaries, Ruto’s Personal Assistants, and friends.
He accused them of sowing discord between him and the president.
Gachagua questioned the audacity of those who, despite holding positions like personal assistants, Cabinet Secretaries, or bloggers, believe they have the right to dictate to an elected deputy president.
He denounced these allies of the president for their condescending attitude, stressing that only the president and the Kenyan people have the authority to guide him.
“Even some of his friends, his PAs want to order me around on how to do my work.
Is it possible? Even bloggers of the president want to tell me what to do… you know me, I have only two bosses, President Ruto and the people of Kenya,” Gachagua stated.
The deputy president pledged his loyalty to President Ruto and commitment to his duties but rejected the notion that the president’s friends could act as his superiors.
He emphasized that he was elected by the Kenyan people and could distinguish between his actual boss and his boss’s associates.
Gachagua criticized Ruto’s friends for overstepping their boundaries, reminding them of their actual roles.
He blamed these allies for the perceived rift between him and the president, alleging that they had formed a WhatsApp group called ‘Project 22’ to incite other leaders against him.
“The problem you are currently witnessing is that some people who are friends of the president also want to be my boss. Is it possible?” Gachagua asked.
He further added, “Now they are trying to incite other leaders against me through a group called Project 22 by convincing them that I am a bad person.”
Reflecting on the period before the 2022 Presidential Elections, Gachagua recalled that his current critics were against his selection as Ruto’s running mate and had pushed for his replacement.
“When Ruto was looking for a running mate, he had many choices.
There was a small group that was saying that if he made me his deputy, he would fail,” he remarked.
“They attempted to convince him but finally he made up his mind as a very seasoned politician and came to the conclusion that it was me to be his deputy.”
Gachagua reaffirmed his dedication to the unity of the Mt Kenya region and dismissed allegations of promoting tribal politics.
He argued that their support for Ruto, despite him not being Kikuyu, demonstrated their patriotism.
“We have elected Ruto knowing that he is not a Kikuyu.
We don’t want people telling us that we are tribal.
We are patriots because of electing Ruto,” he declared.
