Kilifi County is taking a major step towards modernizing its healthcare system with the adoption of digital solutions.
Governor Gideon Mung’aro announced the introduction of the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system, a platform designed to streamline patient data management and improve service delivery in healthcare facilities across the county.
The EMR system allows healthcare professionals to securely store, access, and share patients’ medical records, including treatment histories, diagnoses, and medication details.
This innovation is set to replace the traditional reliance on notebooks, offering a more efficient and reliable method for managing patient information.
Speaking during an interview with NTV, Governor Mung’aro explained that the initiative was driven by the challenges patients faced, such as traveling long distances only to discover they lacked essential documents like consultation notebooks.
“We introduced the EMR system to address persistent issues faced by our patients. For instance, someone from Ganze would travel a long way only to realize they didn’t have a doctor’s book,” said Mung’aro.
The governor revealed that the system is already operational in half of Kilifi County and is set to expand to remote areas.
He also noted that nurses will soon be equipped with tablets containing comprehensive patient data, eliminating the need for bulky physical files.
Since the implementation of the EMR system, the county has experienced a significant increase in revenue, with monthly turnover rising from sh1 million to sh7 million.
“The system has brought transformation. It’s not just about patient care; it also helps reduce issues like theft of medicine in public hospitals,” added Mung’aro.
Governor Mung’aro expressed optimism about the system’s potential to revolutionize healthcare in Kilifi and beyond.
He emphasized that the success of the EMR system could serve as a model for other counties to adopt similar digital healthcare solutions.
The move is part of broader efforts to improve healthcare access and efficiency in Kilifi County.
In January last year, Mung’aro waived ambulance fees for patients, further demonstrating his commitment to enhancing healthcare services.
Kilifi County’s embrace of digital healthcare solutions signals a promising future for the integration of technology into Kenya’s healthcare system.
