Ghana’s Navy and other teams have rushed to help thousands of people in trouble due to overflowing dams during heavy rains.
The Volta region alone has seen more than 8,000 people saved from the rising waters of Akosombo and Kpong hydroelectric dams.
A Navy official shared with local media that they’ve “rescued over 8,000 people affected by the floods and brought them to safe places.”
Commodore EA Kwafo added that their team is actively responding to distress calls and keeping a close eye on important buildings and structures.
They’ve also sent more boats downstream, along with skilled divers and lifesavers, to assist with the rescue work.
They’re ready to provide more help as the situation evolves.
The controlled release of water from the dams began about a month ago and is still happening, according to the Volta River Authority.
The resulting flooding has posed a significant humanitarian challenge in many communities in parts of the Volta, Eastern, and Greater Accra regions.
Reports suggest that at least 12,000 people have been forced to leave their homes due to the ongoing floods.
