The government has disbursed Sh1.5 billion to facilitate the distribution of bursaries and grants to affirmative action groups in all 47 counties through the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF).
Anne Wang’ombe, the Gender and Affirmative Action Principal Secretary (PS), stated that the allocated funds for the third and fourth Quarter of the 2023/2024 Financial Year would cover educational bursaries for students from disadvantaged households.
Emphasizing the government’s steadfast commitment to improving the well-being of affirmative action groups and increasing their access to financial resources and services, Wang’ombe made the announcement during a ceremony in Kisumu County where she oversaw the disbursement of funds to various vulnerable groups, organized by the Office of the Woman Representative, Ruth Odinga.
Approximately 2,000 registered affirmative action groups are slated to receive grants totaling Sh413 million to bolster socio-economic activities and promote value-addition initiatives.
“The grants aim to enhance the disposable income of beneficiaries, thereby improving their livelihoods through entrepreneurship development,” noted the PS.
Eligible group members who had successfully submitted their applications through NGAAF County offices are set to benefit from these grants.
Additionally, around 25,000 students nationwide are poised to benefit from bursaries and scholarships amounting to Sh273 million to support their education and skills development.
NGAAF has already disbursed Sh677 million to implement diverse projects and programs intended to benefit communities across the 47 counties.
According to Wang’ombe, NGAAF will continue supporting the prevention and response to Sexual and Gender-based Violence (GBV) by constructing GBV centers, nurturing talents, providing water facilities, and other social amenities conducive to business growth.
Through NGAAF, Sh137 million has been earmarked for civic education to raise awareness among community members about various government programs and policies, thus ensuring increased participation in these initiatives.
