Kisumu County Governor Anyang Nyong’o has called for an explanation from the National Police Service (NPS) concerning the recent arrest and deportation of 36 Ugandan opposition politicians.
The politicians, affiliated with the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Party, were apprehended at the Ukweli Pastoral Centre guest house on the Kisumu-Kakamega highway and subsequently deported.
Governor Nyong’o issued a statement revealing that the FDC members were attacked and forcibly detained during a meeting held on July 23.
According to Ugandan opposition leader Kiiza Besigye, the group had just concluded their meeting when armed individuals, suspected to be security personnel from both Uganda and Kenya, forcibly entered their rooms.
The group was reportedly assaulted, arrested, and then driven back to Uganda in the dead of night.
Nyong’o emphasized that the FDC politicians had entered Kenya legally with the proper immigration approvals to attend their meeting.
He condemned the violent treatment they received and expressed concern over the involvement of Kenyan security forces in the incident.
Despite the Kisumu County Government’s lack of direct involvement with the politicians, Nyong’o described the situation as regrettable and demanded a thorough investigation.
The Governor stressed that Kenya, as a democratic nation, must adhere to international human rights standards and should not allow its territory to be used to undermine the rights of individuals legally present in the country.
He urged for clear explanations from the police regarding their officers’ participation in the incident and called for comprehensive inquiries into the matter.
