Women residing in the Ongata Rongai area have urged the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to halt the hunt for Makena, the lioness notorious for consuming dogs and making headlines.
The lioness, responsible for devouring six dogs in Ongata Rongai’s fields, has garnered praise from the county’s women, who regard her as a hero.
According to the women, Makena’s presence ensures their husbands return home by 6 pm, creating a more family-oriented atmosphere reminiscent of a “factory environment.”
Some residents from nearby towns like Kitengela and Kajiado even wish for Makena to visit their homes to facilitate earlier family reunions.
Mercy Joshua expressed her gratitude for Makena’s calming influence on families around Ongata Rongai, deeming her a blessing.
However, Purity Gikunda highlighted concerns about men’s safety, fearing repercussions if they return home after 6 pm due to Makena’s presence.
Despite these worries, Regina Muranja and Komoi Perset hailed Makena as their hero for promoting early returns.
Sarah Karanja, a Kajiado town resident, also seeks Makena’s assistance in restoring order in her household.
The women collectively implore KWS to cease tracking Makena, citing personal benefits from her presence.
Some women have reported living harmoniously with their husbands since Makena’s emergence, noting improved family dynamics and reduced late-night activities outside the home.
Sabina Chege highlighted positive changes, with husbands returning home early and bringing home meat they would have consumed at bars.
However, amidst the support for Makena, Kinayia Ole Moinkett and Leonard Ole Koinari expressed hostility, threatening to kill her.
They refuse to let a lioness dictate their evening routines and assert their dominance over wildlife.
In response to viral CCTV footage depicting Makena climbing a wall at a private residence, KWS dispatched its Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC) team to Ongata Rongai to address the situation.
