The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) has officially appointed Hassan Omar as the new Secretary General of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), succeeding Cleophas Malala.
This move follows a decision by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to replace Malala, who had been serving in the role on an interim basis.
In a statement released on Monday, Political Parties Registrar Ann Nderitu emphasized the urgency for UDA to complete its grassroots elections within the next 180 days.
This step is crucial to resolving the ongoing issue of interim officials and stabilizing party operations.
Nderitu’s call reflects the need for UDA to address its internal challenges and ensure a smooth electoral process.
The decision to appoint Omar, who was previously the Vice Chairperson of UDA, comes amid internal party disputes.
A faction of UDA members had been vocal in their criticism of Malala, accusing him of obstructing the party’s progress and undermining the coalition government led by President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
The critics, led by lawyer Joe Khalende, alleged that Malala had acted as a mole for the party’s opponents, sabotaging UDA’s development and effectiveness.
Additionally, Malala faced criticism for his handling of party processes and the organization of grassroots elections, which have been marred by chaos and legal disputes.
The move to appoint Omar is seen as a step towards addressing these issues and restoring order within the party.
As UDA moves forward with this leadership change, there is an expectation for renewed focus on internal reforms and successful completion of the grassroots elections, which are vital for the party’s long-term stability and success.
