The defense in the case involving the murder of LGBTQ activist Edwin Kiprotich, known as Chiloba, has concluded its presentation, while the prime suspect has made vigorous attempts to exonerate himself regarding the 2023 killing.
Jacktone Odhiambo, a 25-year-old freelance photographer, stands accused of murdering Chiloba, a final-year student in Apparel Fashion and Design at the University of Eldoret (UoE).
Odhiambo has pleaded not guilty to charges of killing Chiloba between December 31, 2022, and January 3, 2023, at Noble Breeze Apartment located in the Chebisaas area of Uasin Gishu County.
Chiloba’s body was discovered in a decomposed state, hidden in a metallic box along the Kipkenyo-Kaptinga road in Kapseret Sub County, approximately 10 kilometers from Eldoret town, on January 3, 2023.
Throughout the year-long proceedings in Eldoret High Court, the prosecution presented 22 key witnesses, including government pathologist Johansen Oduor.
During the hearings, Polycarp Kweyu, the principal chemist from the government chemist in Kisumu, testified that DNA samples collected from a bed cover matched those of Odhiambo.
Additionally, Jane Waya, a government analyst from Kisumu who performed toxicological tests on samples from Chiloba’s body, reported that no chemical substances were detected.
Justice Nyakundi has instructed both the prosecution and the victim’s attorney to submit their final arguments within the next two weeks.
A judgment in the case is scheduled to be delivered on November 8, 2024.
The outcome of this case has attracted significant public attention, given its implications for LGBTQ rights and safety in the region.
