Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has committed to transforming the African Union (AU) into a more people-centric organization, focusing on advancing the continent’s interests if elected to lead the AU.
During the official launch of his candidacy at State House, Nairobi, Odinga outlined several key reforms aimed at achieving this vision.
Central to his platform is the introduction of an AU visa to simplify travel across African nations and promote intra-African trade.
Odinga believes that such a measure will enhance mobility and economic integration within the continent.
Additionally, he highlighted the importance of overhauling airspace regulations to improve connectivity and facilitate commerce across Africa.
The launch event, held on Tuesday, was attended by a notable gathering of current and former leaders from across the continent.
Among the attendees were Kenya’s President William Ruto, Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir, and Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu.
Former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria and Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania were also present, underscoring the broad support for Odinga’s candidacy.
In his address, Odinga emphasized his commitment to making the AU more responsive to the needs of its people, aligning with the vision of the attending leaders.
He expressed his dedication to enacting reforms that will foster greater unity and economic prosperity across Africa.
