PDF files are widely used, especially in the business world, for their cross-platform compatibility and consistent appearance across devices.
However, editing them can be challenging by design.
If you find yourself needing to make changes to a PDF file, converting it to a Word document is a practical solution.
Although the formatting might not match the original PDF precisely, you gain access to Microsoft Word’s powerful formatting tools.
Method 1: Using Microsoft Word
If you already have access to Microsoft Word, this method is straightforward and convenient.
Here’s a step-by-step guide:
- Locate the PDF file on your computer without opening it.
- Right-click on the PDF file and select “Open with.”
- Choose Word from the options. If Word isn’t visible, select “Choose another app,” then click “More apps,” find Word, and click OK.
- Word will open, and a dialog box will request permission to convert the PDF to Word. Click OK.
- Depending on the PDF’s size and complexity, the conversion may take a few moments or minutes. Save the file in Word format.
Quick Tip: Word preserves the original PDF file, so you can find it in its original folder.
However, you now have an additional version in Word format.
Method 2: Using Google Docs
For those without access to Microsoft Word, Google Docs offers an alternative method:
- Open Google Docs in a web browser.
- Click the folder icon (Open file picker) at the top of the page.
- In the Open a file window, navigate to the Upload tab.
- Open the PDF file you want to convert on your computer.
- Once the PDF is displayed in Google Drive, click the “Open with” arrow, select Google Docs.
- In Google Docs, click File, then Download, and choose Microsoft Word (.docx). The file will be saved to your Downloads folder.
Quick Tip: Google Docs won’t convert images from your PDF, so image content will be lost during the conversion process.
Method 3: Using Adobe Acrobat
If you have Adobe Acrobat Pro or a subscription, converting PDF to Word is a breeze:
- Open Adobe Acrobat, then open the PDF you want to convert.
- In the Tools pane on the right, click Export PDF.
- In the Export PDF window, choose Microsoft Word Document (*.docx).
- Click Export to Word.
Once the export is complete, locate the file in the Exported Files icon, choose a location, and save the new Word file to your computer.
Note: Adobe Acrobat Pro is a paid program, so it requires purchase or subscription.
