The Nairobi Expressway is a 27-kilometer elevated highway that runs from Westlands along the Waiyaki way to Mlolongo, Mombasa road.

It was built to ease the heavy traffic congestion witnessed along Mombasa Road and reduce the travel time from JKIA to Westlands from two hours to 20 minutes.
The Expressway has 15 entrance points and 14 exit points that provide convenience to motorists using the road.
Moja Expressway Company is mandated to operate the Expressway for 27 years and recover the money used in construction through toll fees.
The toll fees vary depending on the vehicle class and the distance covered.
There are three payment options available for users: cash, ETC Service, and MTC Card.
ETC Service
ETC Service is an electronic toll collection system that uses an On-Board Unit (OBU) device installed on the windshield of the vehicle.

The device scans the toll station and deducts points from the user’s account automatically.
Users of ETC Service enjoy a 5% discount per trip.
To subscribe to ETC Service, you need to visit the service center at Nairobi Expressway Plaza or Lavington service center or apply online at www.nairobiexpressway.ke.
You will need to fill in a registration form and present your ID/Passport, vehicle registration number, and logbook.
Also, pay a service charge of Ksh.1000 and purchase toll points worth at least Ksh.2000.
Then get an OBU device installed on your vehicle and activate your ETC service.
To use ETC Service, you need to access the Expressway using any entry point and maintain a low speed of 20kph.
Make sure you select the displayed ETC lane on the toll station.
Once the OBU system captures your vehicle details, the barrier will be lifted, and you can proceed.
You can top up your account online using a USSD code or at the service center.
MTC Card
MTC Card is a tap-and-go card-based cashless system that allows users to access the expressway using different vehicles.

Users of MTC Card enjoy a 2% discount per trip.
To subscribe to MTC Card, visit the service center at Nairobi Expressway Plaza, fill in a registration form, and present your ID/Passport.
You will also pay a service charge of Ksh.300 and purchase toll points worth any amount.
Then receive an MTC card that you can use to tap at the toll station and pay for your trip.
To use MTC Card, access the Expressway using any entry point and maintain a low speed of 20kph.
Make sure you select the displayed MTC lane on the toll station.
Once you tap your card on the reader, the barrier will be lifted, and you can proceed.
You can top up your account online using a USSD code or at the service center.
Cash Payment
Cash payment is an option for users who do not have ETC Service or MTC Card.
Users of cash payment do not enjoy any discounts.
To use cash payment, you will access the Expressway using any entry point and press the voucher button at the entry station.
Then, receive a voucher that shows your entry point, vehicle class, and date.
After that, proceed to your exit point and pay using the voucher at the exit station.
The Nairobi Expressway is a convenient and fast way to travel across Nairobi.
By subscribing to ETC Service or MTC Card, you can enjoy cashless access and discounts on your trips.
