Thursday urged road users to be vigilant during this Easter Holiday as some parts of the country continue to receive heavy rains.
In a notice dated April 6, 2023, the IG said that heavy traffic is expected on roads across the country as people travel for the celebrations.
Based on the National Police Service statistics, road traffic accidents remain a major cause of injuries and fatalities, with most of the victims being pedestrians, motorcyclists, and pillion passengers in accidents lately attributed to preventable human errors.
“We, therefore, appeal to all road users to comply with traffic rules by putting on safety belts, adhering to speed limits, avoiding overloading and reckless driving, driving while texting, and driving un-roadworthy vehicles,” Koome stated.
“Due to the ongoing rains, some roads may be flooded and therefore motorists are urged to drive carefully,” the IG further cautioned.
He said the traffic officers have been deployed to ensure the free flow of traffic, compliance with traffic regulations, enforcement of traffic rules, and provision of assistance to the public as need be.
Those found driving under the influence of alcohol and other psychotropic substances, according to the IG will be arrested and dealt with according to the law.
The general public is warned against overindulgence during the festive season, especially in alcohol.
“We have equally deployed adequate personnel in public places including major highways, shopping malls, airports, railway and bus stations, places of worship, and recreational centers.”
Members of the public and owners of social places and churches are advised to remain vigilant by increasing their surveillance and screening of their patrons, sharing timely information, and reporting any suspicious activities.
