The National Police Service has condemned the misconduct displayed by a police officer caught on a viral video harassing and threatening while armed and appearing intoxicated.
In the video, the police are seen pulling out a gun and threatening to shoot the tires of a lorry caught with charcoal.
The efforts by the harassed man pleading for a chance to defend himself fall on deaf ears.
“Allow me to defend myself. I am your child. The others have refused, leave them,” the man whose vehicle was transporting charcoal pleads.
The officer reiterates that he is not respected despite the man repeatedly saying “I respect you, officer.”
The video ended while the police were trying to force him into a police vehicle to take him to court.
Inspector General Japhet Koome said Saturday that NPS does not condone or protect any officer found engaging in abuse of powers, privileges, or other actions that can bring disrepute to the image of the police.
“As a service, we are gravely concerned by, and strongly condemn, the misconduct displaced by the officer.”
“We regret the incident and reiterate that the behavior exhibited by the said officer does not reflect the core values of NPS, more so during this reform period where we are focused on, and committed to fostering and promoting good police-community relations, as enshrined in the Constitution of Kenya,” he said.
The IG said they had identified the officer and they were reviewing the incident for appropriate internal disciplinary action.
