As the process to select the new IEBC commission proceeds, Nelson Makanda, the Chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Selection Panel, has made the dates for the interviews of the shortlisted candidates public.
Makanda announced the final list of applicants for the chairperson position in an official notice issued on Friday, March 14.
The list was reduced from 37 to 11 candidates, who have now been invited for interviews beginning on Monday, March 24.
According to the notice, “The names of applicants shortlisted for the position of Chairperson and Member of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, as well as the date and time for the respective oral interviews, are hereby published by the Selection Panel.”
Three rounds of interviews will be held with the 11 chairperson candidates: a four-person round on Monday, a second four-person round on Tuesday, and a final three- person round on Wednesday, March 26.
The Selection Panel has also reduced the number of commissioner candidates on the shortlist to 105, and interviews are set to take place until Thursday, April 24. Thirty-two of the 105 candidates are female.
The public is welcome to attend the oral interviews, which will take place in the College of Insurance’s Ballroom in South C, Nairobi County.
All shortlisted candidates must bring the original copies of their certificates and testimonials, as well as their passport or national identity card.
Before the candidates depart the interview location, these documents must be given back to them.
Kenyans are urged to provide written and sworn information about the shortlisted candidates’ suitability.
Submissions for the commissioner candidates must be made by 5 p.m. on March 26 and those for the chairperson candidates by 5 p.m. on March 19.
Additionally, the Selection Panel has warned all candidates that they will be automatically disqualified from the proceedings if they attempt to influence or solicit votes during the selection process.
