An investigation is currently underway following the tragic death of a teacher in Kirinyaga County, which is being treated as a suicide.
According to Mwea-East Police Commander Patrick Nyaanga, 51-year-old Danson Kariuki was found deceased in Mirera village.
Kariuki, who was employed at Urumandi Primary School in Murinduko Ward, was discovered hanging from a tree by local residents.
The incident has sparked considerable alarm within the community, particularly due to a concerning rise in suicide cases across Kirinyaga County.
Local leaders, including Kamau Muchira, the Chairman of the Kirinyaga Counselor Council, have expressed deep concern.
Muchira and other officials attribute these tragic events to a combination of factors such as substance abuse, social pressures, and stress, which appear to be disproportionately affecting men and youth in the region.
Muchira conveyed the shock and sadness felt by the community following the death of Kariuki, highlighting the significant emotional impact on students, fellow teachers, and residents.
The loss of a dedicated educator has left a void in the community and prompted calls for increased awareness and support.
In response to the rising suicide rates, counselors in Kirinyaga have emphasized the critical need for robust support services to address mental health issues and prevent further tragedies.
They advocate for enhanced resources and outreach programs to help those in distress.
The body of Danson Kariuki has been transported to a nearby mortuary for further examination as the investigation into the circumstances of his death continues.
The community remains hopeful that increased support and intervention can help mitigate the factors contributing to such devastating incidents.
