Early Life and Education
Born in 1980 in Murang’a County, Irungu Kang’ata attended Murang’a Township Primary School and later Thika High School for his secondary education. His academic journey continued at the University of Nairobi, where he pursued a Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree.
While at the university, Kang’ata emerged as a student leader, serving as the vice-chair of the Kenya Law Student Society and later as the vice-chairman of the Student Organization of Nairobi University (SONU). His advocacy for student rights led to a temporary suspension in 2000 for leading a strike, but he returned in 2003 to complete his studies.
Kang’ata continued his academic pursuit, earning a Master of Laws (LL.M) degree from the University of Nairobi and further establishing himself as a legal scholar.

Upon admission to the bar in 2007, Kang’ata began his legal career as a state counsel in the Attorney General’s office. Subsequently, he ventured into private practice, founding Irungu Kang’ata and Company Advocates, a law firm specializing in corporate law.
Known for his commitment to justice, Kang’ata defended Ruth Kerubo in a high-profile case against the then Deputy Chief Justice Nancy Baraza in 2012. His legal prowess and dedication to upholding the rule of law earned him recognition and respect.

Irungu Kang’ata’s foray into politics began early in his life. Despite facing challenges during his university years, including a suspension, he was elected as a councilor for Central Ward in Murang’a in 2002.
In 2013, he won the Kiharu parliamentary seat on a TNA ticket, showcasing his popularity and political acumen. His political career continued with a successful bid for the Murang’a senatorial seat in the 2017 general elections, where he garnered over 55% of the votes.

Kang’ata’s dedication to fighting corruption and advocating for the people was evident when he took a strong stance against misappropriation of bursary funds and called for a judiciary overhaul in response to bribery allegations.
