As nations continue to evacuate their citizens from Lebanon, reports have surfaced regarding an incident involving Israeli forces and United Nations (UN) peacekeepers.
On October 11, 2024, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged that their troops inadvertently injured two Sri Lankan soldiers serving with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon.
The IDF stated that its soldiers opened fire after identifying what they believed to be a threat near the UN base in Naqoura, located in southern Lebanon.
They also confirmed that an investigation into the incident would be conducted amid growing international condemnation of Israel’s actions in its ongoing conflict with Hamas, which has resulted in significant displacement of Lebanese civilians.
Further reports indicated that two Indonesian UN soldiers sustained injuries after falling from an observation tower due to an Israeli tank shelling directed at it.
In response to the situation, the United States, a key ally of Israel, urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to prioritize the safety of peacekeepers, as global calls for a ceasefire intensify.
The Israeli military operations in Lebanon have primarily focused on the Hezbollah militia, which has been a longstanding adversary of Israel and is backed by Iran.
Hezbollah emerged during the Lebanese Civil War, which lasted from 1975 to 1990, and has consistently opposed Israeli actions while resisting Western influence in the region.
Following the attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, Israel initiated extensive military operations in Gaza, targeting Hamas infrastructure.
This retaliation inadvertently escalated tensions with Hezbollah, which began launching rockets into Israel in solidarity with Palestinians.
Israel’s aggressive military strategy has faced significant backlash, with accusations of violating international law and causing civilian casualties in Palestine, including drone strikes that have led to thousands of deaths and the destruction of critical infrastructure.
The international community has raised concerns over these actions, notably following an airstrike in Gaza on April 1, 2024, that killed seven aid workers from World Central Kitchen, sparking outrage and calls for accountability.
