A police officer from the Kahawa West Police Station has been arrested for allegedly demanding sh. 50,000 to withdraw a criminal case from court.
Police Constable Christine Nyokabi Macharia was apprehended on Monday by officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi confirmed the arrest, stating that Nyokabi was initially held at Kilimani Police Station before being transferred to the EACC Integrity Centre for further processing on Tuesday.
The incident unfolded when the EACC received information regarding the officer’s alleged extortion scheme.
It is reported that she solicited the money from a complainant in exchange for dropping the charges related to a pending criminal case.
This conduct raises serious concerns about corruption within law enforcement, prompting the EACC to take decisive action.
After her arrest, Nyokabi was subjected to questioning, during which she provided a statement regarding the allegations.
As part of standard procedures, she is now awaiting her court appearance to face the charges against her.
This case underscores the EACC’s commitment to combating corruption in the police force and ensuring accountability within public service.
The commission has been actively investigating various cases of corruption, and this incident reflects their ongoing efforts to maintain integrity in law enforcement agencies.
Members of the public are encouraged to report any instances of corruption or misconduct by police officers, as such actions undermine trust in law enforcement and the justice system.
The EACC continues to urge citizens to cooperate in the fight against corruption, emphasizing the importance of transparency and integrity in public service.
