Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called on the government to fast-track the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), describing the matter as a national priority.
Speaking during a multi-sectoral forum on the use of artificial intelligence in elections, Kalonzo voiced concerns that the delay might be a deliberate attempt by the state to manipulate the process for its own benefit ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The reconstitution of the IEBC should not be delayed any further.
This is critical for the country’s democratic integrity,” he said, urging those obstructing the process to put national interests above personal agendas.
Kalonzo also highlighted the role of technology in enhancing electoral credibility, stressing the need for the IEBC to conduct comprehensive voter education on any digital tools or platforms it plans to deploy.
“IEBC must ensure transparency and public confidence by thoroughly educating voters on the technologies they intend to use,” he noted.
His sentiments were echoed by U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires David Gosney, who underlined the importance of a fully operational electoral body in safeguarding Kenya’s governance and democratic systems.
Kalonzo further cautioned the Senate against proposed amendments that could eliminate the live streaming of election results, warning that such changes would undermine transparency and erode trust in the electoral process.
The forum also featured remarks from ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo, who underscored the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in election campaigns and data management.
Owalo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to adopting innovative technologies to improve the efficiency and credibility of Kenya’s electoral processes.
