Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka recently addressed allegations regarding the funding of the 2013 presidential campaign during an interview with Citizen TV on October 15, 2024.
He revealed that he had contacted Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo, urging him to apologize to Raila Odinga for comments suggesting that the Adani Group financed the Cord presidential campaign in 2012, in which Kalonzo served as Odinga’s deputy.
When asked about the claims that Adani provided financial support for the 2012 campaign, Kalonzo stated he was unaware of any such arrangement, emphasizing that presidential candidates typically handle their own fundraising efforts independently.
He expressed his respect for Odinga as the current party leader, reinforcing the importance of maintaining party unity.
“I reached out to Dan Maanzo and advised him that he should apologize to Baba (Raila Odinga), since Baba remains his party leader,” Kalonzo explained.
“I wouldn’t know anything about this because, in presidential campaigns, candidates usually manage their finances on their own.”
Kalonzo further distanced himself from any connection to the Adani Group, declaring that he had never met the individual behind the firm and had not inquired about fundraising amounts from Odinga.
He indicated that such questions would be inappropriate.
“I don’t know who Adani is and I have never encountered him.
Throughout my political journey, I never asked Raila how much money he raised for his campaigns.
I believed it would be improper to do so.
I supported Raila Odinga with my own resources,” Kalonzo asserted.
His comments follow recent sensational claims made by Senator Maanzo, who suggested that the Indian conglomerate Adani Group had sponsored Raila Odinga’s presidential bid in 2012.
Maanzo argued that this past financial support explained why Odinga has been defending the company.
“Raila has acknowledged knowing this company as far back as 2010 when he was Prime Minister, and it played a role in funding his campaign to become president in 2012,” Maanzo stated.
This discussion arose after Raila defended the Adani Group, calling them a credible partner and highlighting their capabilities in executing projects that outshine those of other firms in East Africa.
“Adani is indeed a credible partner. Their proven track record in various projects exceeds anything we have observed in East Africa,” Raila stated.
