Youth rights activist Kasmuel McOure has expressed regret over a recent photo opportunity he had with South Mugirango MP Silvanus Osoro.
In a video posted to his X account on Monday evening, McOure, who gained prominence during the Gen Z-led anti-government protests in June and July, addressed the stir caused by their brief encounter last Wednesday.
He noted that many in his community are speculating that he may have betrayed their cause by aligning himself with the Kenya Kwanza administration, a notion he vehemently denies.
“I’ve received numerous messages asking if I’ve switched sides or joined the government,” he said.
McOure clarified that while he has received multiple offers from the government since the protests, he remains committed to his principles of advocating for human rights and has no intention of working with what he deems a disrespectful regime.
He expressed regret over the decision to be photographed with an MP associated with that government.
The activist explained that the photo was taken by a female legislator accompanying Osoro while he was on his way to a familiar club.
During their brief interaction, he expressed his disapproval of the government’s actions.
“I haven’t been bought off.
For those concerned about my silence, it’s simply because my work has shifted to community-focused efforts,” he added.
This is the second time McOure has had to clarify the meeting, having initially addressed it last Thursday after images of him with Osoro went viral.
As a vocal critic of the Kenya Kwanza government, he has become a prominent figure representing the ‘faceless and tribeless’ Gen Z movement.
His lack of recent media appearances does not indicate a shift in allegiance, he stressed.
McOure condemned Osoro, highlighting past remarks the MP made during the protests that he found offensive.
“I’m deeply sorry for the confusion this has caused. I’ve been apologizing within the communities I work in and reiterate that I am not interested in collaborating with the Kenya Kwanza government,” he concluded.
Osoro, the Majority Chief Whip in the National Assembly, was a key supporter of the controversial Finance Bill, 2024, which incited protests that turned violent, leading to tragic consequences.
