A Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer died after the Toyota Fielder he was driving collided with a Mercedes Benz trailer along the Eldoret-Nakuru Highway on Saturday afternoon.
The crash occurred near Galana Petrol Station, opposite Sukunanga Police Station, police said.
Police said the trailer was travelling from Nakuru towards Eldoret when it hit a bump while ascending the road.
The impact allegedly caused the trailer to leave its lane and collide with the oncoming Toyota Fielder.
The Fielder was thrown several metres off the road while the trailer veered into a ditch on the opposite side.
The driver of the Fielder, identified as John Kiprotich, 35, a KDF officer attached to Thika Base Engineering, sustained serious head injuries.
He was rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) for treatment but succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
The trailer driver and his two passengers sustained bruises on both legs. They were also taken to MTRH, where they were receiving treatment.
Police officers visited, documented and processed the accident scene.
Kiprotich’s body was preserved at the MTRH mortuary pending a postmortem examination.
The Toyota Fielder was towed to Langas Police Station yard, while efforts were underway to remove the trailer from the scene for further investigations.
More than a dozen people were at the weekend killed in separate road accidents. The accidents also left many with serious injuries, police said amid investigations.
Officials say reckless overtaking, speeding, and drunk driving remain among the leading causes of road accidents across the country, continuing to claim lives despite sustained public safety campaigns by National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
Mechanical failures from poorly maintained vehicles, including worn tyres and faulty brakes, have also been identified as significant contributors to the growing number of crashes.
In addition to driver negligence, poor road conditions such as potholes, confusing signage, and inadequate lighting make travel increasingly hazardous, particularly at night.
